Dermaplaning is a much-favored method of exfoliation widely used in the entertainment world. It employs the use of a very fine scalpel to scrape off the layer of top dead skin cells to reveal the healthier, newer ones beneath. The procedure also benefits by removing the facial hairs thus leaving the new skin surface very smooth and with a rich glowing tone.
The disposal of the old rougher epidermal tissue has the added benefits of allowing the better application of skincare products such as moisturizer and foundation creams and can be a good basic procedure as prepping for further facial cosmetic enhancements as and when necessary.
Dermaplaning can be more acceptable as a form of exfoliation treatment in comparison to other procedures such as microdermabrasion - a pressure abrasion method to ‘blast ‘away dead skin cells and pores in opposition to the Dermaplaning which in the hands of a skilled practitioner uses a scalpel to erode any surface layer away more gently, especially for those that have drier skin types. Both methods do the work well and it can be down to a personal preference and professional advice.
Suitability
Dermaplaning is suitable for almost all skin types. It is safe for women who wish to avoid ingestion of chemical treatments or substances that may cause side effects. The exception is for those individuals that suffer from skin conditions, like acne. Consultation with your health professional is strongly recommended if an individual suffers from flare up or continued cystic acne.
The Treatment
Dermaplaning is painless and the sensation of patient treatment has been likened to the close feeling of using a razor shave on your face or legs, and the treatment takes approximately half an hour. The skin is cleaned and dried in preparation for the treatment. It is then stretched tight and the treatment area is scraped with a fine scalpel in short, firm actions to remove the dead layer of skin cells.
Results
The treatment leaves a smooth texture and tone to the skin, but be aware the resulting exposure of new skin will leave it looking pink in hue and it will feel very soft. A high protection sunscreen SPF 30+ is recommended to protect the newly exposed skin layers. The advantages of having no downtime for recuperation after treatment cannot be understated. Please remember that a few layers of dead facial cells are removed per treatment and you need to give the skin sufficient time to recover again before your next treatment, which should only be undertaken by a qualified health professional.
