Sclerotherapy is a treatment for unsightly thread veins on the legs, practised by Doctors, nurses, and here at the Aesthetic Beauty Centre.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a treatment, which involves injecting unwanted, thread veins with a dilute substance causing inflammation of the vein wall, which causes the vessel to seal up. The body naturally clears away the remains of the vein over a period of weeks.

What does the treatment involve?

Very small amounts of the chemical is injected into the vein. A tiny needle is used to minimise discomfort and usually no special pain relief is required, although local anaesthetic cream can be used if so desired.

What happens following treatment?

We usually recommend Class 1 stockings for three to four days following treatment. Normal daily activities can be resumed immediately, but heavy exercise and swimming are best avoided for 5-7 days.

Are there any side effects?

Most patients experience no complications, although some minor side effects have been documented. These include slight blistering, which occurs when small amounts of the solution seep into the surrounding skin areas.

Sometimes, a small, area of pigmentation resembling a freckle can remain, although these spots do disappear with time or can respond to further treatment. Clots can also develop at the site of the injection, although never a major cause for concern, these clots may be removed within a couple of weeks in order to allow the healing process to continue normally.

How long do the results last?

In the long term, sclerotherapy benefits unsightly, superficial veins, however it is not a preventative treatment and cannot stop new veins from appearing.

Qualified doctors will discuss the procedure before any treatment, explaining any possible side effects.
