Facial Hair Transplant for Beard, Moustache, Eyebrows & Eyelashes
Facial hair transplant is a cosmetic procedure for those men who suffer from spotty or patchy loss of hair from eyebrows, goatee, other parts of the beard, moustache or sideburns. The absence of hair in these areas could be hereditary or due to surgical scars, cuts, burns or other types of accidents. Some medical conditions such as Alopecia areata or chemotherapy treatment for cancer could lead to hair loss.
It is important to understand that facial hair constitutes of beard, moustache, eyebrows and eyelashes. When these facial hairs are not in proper alignment, the face will look odd. Stylish beard or moustache is also considered as a fashion statement among many young men.
Am I a Candidate for Facial Hair transplant surgery?
If someone has lost hair in facial areas such as beard, moustache, eyebrows, eyelashes or sideburns or is facing thinning of hair in these areas, then a facial hair transplant would be a good option
If you have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head, which is mainly DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) resistant, to serve as donor areas from which grafts are taken.
If you are trying to gain a little more symmetry in your face
If you want to hide marks or scars, which could range from birthmarks, acne or injury scars
If you want to adjust, change or increase the size of the eyebrows, moustache or beard
If you are physically and mentally healthy and have realistic expectations for the procedure
If you are not suffering from any serious health conditions.
If your previous transplant surgeries have not produced optimal results.
A facial hair transplant is generally a minimally invasive procedure. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and takes 2-5 hours to complete depending on the number of grafts harvested. For facial hair transplant, hair will be removed from the side or the back of the head, via FUE or FUT and healthy hair follicles will be extracted. We commonly use the same FUE technique for this what we use in hair transplantation over the scalp. In this procedure, individual follicular unit grafts (naturally occurring groups of 1-4 hairs in the scalp) are harvested one at a time using a tiny punch from the donor area. The area that needs to receive these hair follicles will be demarcated well in advance, and the surgeon will place the grafts on the patchy bald portions of the beard, moustache or eyebrows. Due to the abundant amount of hair from the donor site, most of the patches can be covered and treated in a single sitting.
In this procedure, direction and orientation of hair are very important. The choice of procedure will be dependent on aspects such as which part of the face is involved and how you want the final design to look like. As there will be minimal scar with the FUE procedure, it is preferred an option for facial hair transplant by most of the patients.
Downtime and recovery-
It is often possible to go back to work within the next 5-7 days after FUE method for facial hair transplant. As it is less invasive, FUE patients tend to recover much quicker, often experiencing minimal pain whereas FUT patients may experience numbness and irritation for days or weeks after treatment.
Dr. Ashish Dutta always recommends that the patient should relax for 3 days after surgery to ensure a quick recovery with minimal discomfort or swelling. Typically by the third day, patients are able to resume non-strenuous activities. Swimming or other water submersion activities and all sports activities should be avoided for 4 weeks after surgery.
Risks and complications-
This is where the expertise of your surgeon comes into the picture, because the more experienced the doctor is, the lesser the chances of anything going wrong. Generally, facial hair transplantation is a relatively safe out-patient procedure and most of the patients are happy with the results. But there are some minor risks and complications with this surgery just as with any other cosmetic surgery. Among the known risks are post-operative bruising, scarring, and more commonly bleeding and forehead and facial swelling. All of these risks are treatable, considered minor, and do not affect the final results of the procedure.
The Facial Hair transplant Result-
The new facial hair typically grows like normal facial hair. The texture and other characteristics of the hair follicle harvested from the scalp, once grown back can be groomed, shaved or allowed to grow to any length similar to the original or native facial hair follicle. After the first 2-3 cycles it is difficult to differentiate between the transplanted and the original hair.
The first few days after the procedure result in tiny crusts forming around each transplanted graft. Within 2-4 weeks some of the transplanted hair will fall out. This is perfectly normal and you will start to notice new growth within a few months. Most patients attain 60% new hair growth six to nine months after surgery but in some cases, it may take up to twelve months for the hair follicle to grow. Results will vary from one person to another.

Facial hair transplant for Eyebrow and Eyelashes-
The eyebrows and eyelashes are the highlighting factors of our face, that’s why its symmetry, shape, size and density has utmost importance to our appearance. If you want to increase the length or the size of your eyebrows or eyelashes, the facial hair transplant can be performed. In this procedure, new hair grafts can be placed to change the shape or the density of the existing eyebrows or to increase the length and density of the existing eyelashes. Hair Transplantation can also be performed on the eyebrows to cover areas affected by scarring and enhance the natural contour of the eyebrow arch where thinning has occurred. This method of hair transplant can also be used to help people who might have been born without eyebrows or eyelashes or have lost them through burn or injury.
Facial hair transplant for moustache and beard-
There are several people who have very little growth in their moustache and this could be due to genetic characteristics, illness or hormonal imbalance. Surgical scars, cuts, burns or other types of accidents or illnesses such as cancer could also lead to the moustache being thin and not having the desired density. But by the hair transplantation for moustache, you can increase the length and width of your moustache and also you can enhance or restore the natural contour of the moustache where thinning has occurred. In the hands of a skilled surgeon, you could even have a completely different style of Moustache. There are also those who might have a bald patch in their beard area. There might be a beard that have a very irregular hairline which could look very odd. But by the hair transplantation for beard, men can enjoy a proper aligned beard, with designed as per their liking. By this method you can also cover your beard areas affected by any scarring.
Facial hair transplant for Facial areas following Facelift / Scarring-
Hair transplant surgery is sometimes required to replace the hair that is lost following surgical face lifts. Brow lift procedures may cause a loss of hair behind the natural 'facial frame'. Hair grafting can be performed into scar tissue to replace hair that has been lost due to scarring due to previous cosmetic surgery procedures.
It is important that you choose to get the procedure done through a reputable facial hair transplant clinic, because if not done by experienced hands, there can be unwanted side effects or the final results can be quite disappointing.
