The Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy also known as Vampire Facelift, is a non-surgical liquid facelift procedure being used to combat the signs of aging in the face. It is developed for those people who want healthy, glowing, youthful, and rejuvenated skin. This skin treatment is done by using the body’s own natural healing property and growth factors derived from the platelets from the patient’s own blood (hence called Vampire Facelift) which stimulate collagen for healing as dermal filler. To enhance volume in different areas of the face, the longer lasting "platelet-rich fibrin matrix" (PRFM) is combined with a hyaluronic acid dermal filler such as Juvéderm or Restylane and this instant facial rejuvenating combination has been trademarked as “Vampire Facelift”.
Am I a Candidate for PRP therapy?
If you are generally in good health and have realistic expectations from the procedure
If you have no serious skin conditions
If you have mild to moderate signs of ageing
If you have thin skin (a condition where the skin folds and wrinkles are caused by brittle surface tissue and poor underlying support) will benefit the most from PRP therapy.
Older patients are good candidate for PRP injections, as it is a minimally invasive procedure with a short recovery period
If a full facial skin resurfacing procedure is recommended, then a PRP injections won’t be the best option.
What parts of the face can PRP treat?
The areas which can be treated by "platelet rich fibrin matrix" (PRFM) method/Vampire facelift are-
1. Forehead wrinkles
2. Frown lines
3. Crow’s feet (lines in corners of the eyes)
4. “Bunny lines” or “bunny nose” — dynamic wrinkles on the nose
5. Lines at corners of the mouth
6. Smile lines
7. Plumping of the cheeks
8. Acne scars and other superficial scars
The PRP therapy procedure -
The Vampire Facelift procedure only takes about half an hour to complete which includes the following:
1. Injecting HA fillers to create a beautiful & natural Shape
2. Isolation of growth factors from the patient's blood and and turn it to the longer lasting "platelet rich fibrin matrix" (PRFM) which is an ideal serum for instant facial rejuvenation.
3. Injecting this serum into patient’s face.
Preparation of PRP-
A small amount of blood (15-30mls) is collected from the patient’s arm and spun in a centrifuge to separate into three layers: platelet poor plasma (PPP), Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and red blood cells or simply to separate the plasma from the RBCs and WBCs. The blood is processed so the platelets are separated from the RBCs. The separated material is platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Then Calcium Chloride or any other activator is added to the PRP to create the thicker and longer lasting platelet rich fibrin matrix (PRFM).
For this non-surgical cosmetic treatment, a topical cream may be applied on the patient face to numb the area. After 30 minutes, the PRP injection or the combination of longer lasting platelet-rich fibrin matrix and the Hyaluronic Acid (HA) filler (like Restylane or Juvederm) is injected in the desired areas of the face to fill out wrinkles and fine lines so as to provide a more youthful appearance. This combination can be used also to further plump up problem areas, such as under the eye or other areas of your face where wrinkling occurs and where added volume is needed.
Platelets play a fundamental role in clotting and are a natural source of growth factors. Following this carefully controlled process, the restorative platelets are injected back under the skin of the face to make it look fresher and more youthful.
Three sessions each at a four week interval is recommended. After the initial treatments, PRP therapy is recommended every 6-12 months to maintain a youthful appearance.
Downtime and recovery -
You can return to your normal activities almost immediately, but it usually takes about a day or two to recover from potential bruising and visible swelling. However, we all are different, many people do recover quickly and can resume their daily activities the following day. After the procedure, Dr Ashish Dutta recommends every patient to keep the skin well hydrated with their normal moisturizer and to apply sunscreen several times a day to protect the skin and maintain the effects of the PRP treatment.
Does PRP injection hurt?
Mild discomfort is expected during the treatment. Since it involves drawing out blood and multiple needle pricks at your desired areas of your face, it may seem uncomfortable and scary but a numbing cream can be used prior to the procedure to ensure less discomfort and minimal pain.
Risk and complications -
PRP therapy is a safe and effective treatment without any side effects. There are very few side effects associated with this therapy because this therapy uses patient’s own plasma to treat signs of ageing. There is a small chance of infection, but allergic reactions are rare. Some temporary redness may be noticeable at the treatment side which settles spontaneously. Swelling and bruising are uncommon.
The PRP therapy results -
Since skin renewal and rejuvenation procedure is done by using the body’s own active regeneration components, facial skin regeneration and renewal effects are continual for about 3 months after the procedure. The results can be experienced on the same day with minimal downtime. The overall effects of the Vampire Facelift or PRP therapy can last for over a year. Vampire Facelift offers a way of both restoring shape, and improving tone and texture of the face, as platelet-rich fibrin matrix increases collagen production, increases blood supply, and triggers new skin and fatty tissue generation, thus creating the brighter and more vibrant appearance that comes with generating new, healthier skin in a safe and natural way. It reduces wrinkles and restores shape & volume around the mouth, eyes and on the cheeks.
