Save Face Investigation Highlights Why Consultations Are Essential
A recent investigation by The Times has uncovered a worrying trend for Botox patients. Regulations introduced a few years ago made it a requirement that anyone issuing prescriptions for Botox can only do so after seeing the patient in person.
Botox, (or Botulinum Toxin to give it its’ official name) is actually a poisonous neurotoxin. But don’t read this and panic, many of the substances we take day to day are also toxins, think caffeine, nicotine and even paracetamol. The key point is that if the substances are incorrectly used the side effects can be highly damaging. Potential side effects from Botox include scarring and even facial paralysis - this is why it is so important that the medical professional prescribing the treatment sees the patient first.
The investigation found that a number of instances where beauticians and other practitioners were offering patients the injections without a face to face consultation with a medical professional. By operating in this way they are able to offer the treatment at cut price rates but what appears to be a great offer can end up causing significant physical and psychological problems for the patient.
During a consultation with a patient we will discuss a variety of topics such as why does the individual feel they need the treatment and what outcomes are they hoping to achieve. We will also cover medical information such as allergies, intolerances and any previous reactions to treatments. As the professionals it our duty to make sure we believe that the individual is making the right choice for them. Aside from understanding medical history to make sure there will be no adverse reactions from any medications or surgery, we also need to be sure the patient is psychologically ready. Conditions such as Body Dysmorphia are well understood but if a patient is expecting unrealistic results from their treatment then it won’t go ahead.
Getting your treatment from a registered medical professional may be a little more expensive and time consuming than nipping to the local beauty parlour, but the risks are far fewer and the results more rewarding.
