Flesh Tunnels / Tribal Piercings - Repairing a Stretched or Split Earlobe

Posted by Dr Ashish Dutta on 11 October 2017

Flesh Tunnel Piercings

Repair of the earlobe is a tried and tested method of cosmetic surgery to renew ear surfaces stretched by tribal ear piercing, the so called flesh tunnels, or earlobes split by the normal accidental tearing of the skin possibly through wearing or catching earrings on a foreign body or sharp surface.

Considering Earlobe Renewal?

Stretched earlobe repair surgery is performed in a similar method to split earlobe repair, but may be a slightly longer procedure .In both cases, an incision is made to the earlobe and then stitched to repair the damaged area .The procedure is quick and done with the client under a local anaesthetic.

Personal And Social Impact

With an earlobe stretched over 8mm in a tribal process it’s highly unlikely that the hole will ever contract to its original size. The resulting abnormality of the earlobe can be very difficult to hide even with long hair and can especially be a problem for short haired men .If the resulting damage be it stretching or tearing is causing distress or lack of confidence, our specialist surgical team are at hand with a viable solution. Personal and social confidence can be yours again following successful surgery.

Is Earlobe Repair Right For Me?

Stretched earlobe repair procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic and takes around 20-30 minutes per surgery. The technique for widely dilated earlobes involves removing excess tissue and using very fine stitches both internally and externally of the remaining tissue to reshape and reform to normal appearance. Split earlobe repair with rotation flap uses a technique that allows patients to safely wear earrings two weeks after the initial procedure instead of a possible six months with the more common standardized procedure; In this case the procedure takes around 30 to 40 minutes per earlobe.

Post Surgery Results

After your earlobe surgery there will be small scarring of the ears which although red, will fade to a pale silvery hue. After 4 to 6 months the earlobe should look almost completely normal without signs of previous piercings. We recommend the ears can then be re-pierced approximately 6 months after the initial procedure.
