Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a disease in which patients have a complete loss of pigment in localised areas of the skin. These areas, often around the mouth and eyes, become completely white. As a result, vitiligo can be cosmetically disfiguring, especially for dark skinned people.
Traditionally, vitiligo patients have been exposed to synthetic ultraviolet A (UVA) light in attempt to stimulate repigmentation. While a minimum of 100 treatments, given two to three times a week over many months, is necessary before any response is seen, less than 50 percent of the patients have a positive response to this therapy.
The Aesthetic Beauty Centre was the first centre in the UK to provide B-Clear® for Vitiligo.
The Targeted PhotoClearing System that provides a new, unique therapy for the treatment of vitiligo. Combining the proven benefits of UVB therapy with the latest advances in targeted light technology, the BClear® system creates a treatment option for patients who previously have not received satisfactory results. Not only does the BClear® laser deliver UVB light which stimulates the pigment producing cells, the laser's deep penetration enables the light to reach any surviving pigment producing cells in the vitiliginous area.
BClear® Treatment of Vitiligo
The innovative technology of the BClear® system represents a significant breakthrough in that it takes existing science to the next level by combining the benefits of highly efficacious UVB light therapy with the latest advances in fibre-optic delivered light technology. The computerised BClear® system delivers precisely targeted light through a fibre-optic cable, in significantly higher doses than those used in traditional UVB light therapy. This allows patients to experience successful results in fewer treatment sessions, with little or no associated side effects.
The BClear® system also allows individually customised treatments that safely and effectively treat all body surface locations and all skin types. It is possible to reduce vitiligo with a few treatments. In contrast to traditional phototherapy techniques, this handheld BClear® laser UV-B therapy is selectively directed toward the affected area, thus sparing the surrounding normal skin from unnecessary radiation exposure.
Petroleum jelly is sometimes applied to the affected area prior to treatment; this enhances the transmission of UVB light through the skin. This also provides patient comfort during treatment, as the treatment head glides more easily over the skin's surface.
Treatment is administered two or three times a week, usually over a two month period. The number of treatments and frequency of treatment will vary between patients, due to the extent of the condition and area being treated. This will be decided during your free consultation with a treatment doctor.
Post Treatment Care
Following treatment slight reddening of the treated area may occur in a small number of cases. Clients should protect the treated area against excessive sun exposure for up to one month after treatment. Patients are encouraged to continue their normal day to day activities following UVB BClear® therapy.
