Many men and women suffer from hair loss making them appear much older and resulting in lack of confidence. The generic term used for baldness is Alopecia, although there are a number of varieties. Some conditions are only temporary with many others more permanent.

Alopecia Totalis refers to the complete loss of hair along with eyebrows and eyelashes. Re-growth is very uncommon under this condition. Alopecia Universalis, includes the total loss of body hair.

However, Androgenic Alopecia, which is the popular name for male baldness, is undoubtedly the most common with varying degrees of severity from small to extreme. It can start very early in life with the hairline receding with loss of hair from the crown until the vertex is void of any hair. The condition can develop over a number of years, with hairs gradually becoming shorter and finer.

Other conditions include: Traction Alopecia caused by placing too much tension on the hair, Diffuse Alopecia which can occur through a variety of reasons. Cicatrical Alopecia is baldness resulting from scarring. Alopecia Senilis is baldness due to old age. In most people the metabolism slows down with increasing age, and nutrients fail to reach the follicles.

Other conditions include Alopecia Adnata baldness at birth, Alopecia Follicularis hair loss due to inflammation of hair follicles, Alopecia Neurotica baldness following a nervous disorder and Trichotillomania caused by pulling one’s own hair.
