BOTULINUM TOXIN (BOTOX ®)
NON-SURGICALBotulinum Toxin or Botox ® is a non-surgical prescription medicine used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions in patients between 30 and 40. It’s one of the best-known treatments for lines and wrinkles caused by smiling, laughing and frowning, otherwise known as expression lines. It is used to prevent muscle contractions that cause furrows and fine lines when the face is making expressions.
The treatment is carried out by the Aesthetic Beauty Centre’s own experienced, trained team of doctors and nurses, representing some of the country’s leading practitioners in facial aesthetics.
Facial lines or wrinkles develop as a result of the underlying facial muscles contracting the skin. Botox ® works by blocking nerve transmission to temporarily minimise the contractions of the facial muscles. In younger people with more elastic skin a temporary line is created by the muscle contraction but immediately disappears as the muscle relaxes. As time goes by, the skin develops a permanent crease that doesn’t disappear, even after the muscle relaxes.
The treatment is very popular for both men and women with effects typically lasting from three to six months. However, recent study in the US now suggests patients receiving Botox ® treatments can reduce wrinkles with half as many sessions after 20 months. The study also shows how Botox ® injections have a prophylactic effect with patients who first started receiving Botox ® in their 30s and 50s are able to prevent dynamic wrinkles from forming.
Temporary wrinkles are often referred to as dynamic lines while permanent wrinkles are known as static lines. Dynamic lines arise as a result of motion because of the underlying muscles. Patients receiving the best results from Botox ® are those in the first category developing lines as a result of the underlying muscle action. These patients often tend to be younger in their late 30s early 40s. In the second category of patients, those with static or permanent lines will notice an improvement following Botox ® treatment, but the line will not totally disappear. Botox ® will help prevent temporary facial lines developing into permanent lines and as mentioned above will lessen the impact of established lines and slow the development of other wrinkles in older patients.
Botox ® is also used to treat Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) Botulinum toxin is a natural purified protein, which is able to temporarily block nerves responsible for switching on the body’s sweat glands. The treatment interrupts the chemical messenger switching off sweating in the area injected.
Botox ® is now being used in the treatment of Migraine, with encouraging results from patients.
During your first consultation our doctors will explain the possible sides effects associated with Botox ® and the list of considerations which need to be taken into account before treatment. Although Botox ® treatments are relatively free of risk, around 2% of our patients may experience unwanted side effects a few days after treatment which could include bruising and discomfort around the injected area. Some patients can also develop headaches, nausea and in the worst cases experience flu-like symptoms post procedure. However it should be stressed this only affects a small minority of people.
Botox ® can also be used in conjunction with other non-surgical treatments including skin peels and micro-dermabrasion. When used in conjunction with cosmetic surgery including a brow lift, face lift, eyelid surgery & laser resurfacing it can enhance and maintain results for longer periods.
Qualified doctors will discuss the procedure before any treatment, explaining any possible side effects. For more information or to arrange a free consultation, contact us.
